    • Place +1 influence token token above leftmost influence space above/below region you chose:
      • Do not gain VP when you do this
    • Place 1 citizen meeple from your supply in that region on the map

This game takes place over 6 eras, with era 1 being the initial setup round and era 6 is when final scoring is performed. The remaining 4 eras contain 3 rounds each and represent different periods of human history.

The core loop in this game is that you are trying to present ideas that then lead to inventions that get shared with humankind so that they can be iterated on and improved to form new inventions.

A given idea does not have to be presented, invented and then shared by the same player.

During the game, players will place their pillars of time markers in the actions spaces in the assembly area. Each player can only ever have one of their markers on a given row of this part of the board. However, different players can have their markers on spaces occupied by another player's piece.

Certain actions in the game require citizen meeples to be placed. You can only ever use meeples that are in the upper space on your player board for a given specialty. If a citizen meeple is exhausted, it must be placed in the lower space for the given specialty.

Citizens can have one of three specialties:

  • Economy (teal)
  • Culture (white)
  • Technology (brown)

Scholars (black) can be used in place of any of the above 3 specialties:

  • If an action exhausts a scholar, it is exhausted as the type of specialist that it performed the action as
  • Otherwise, it is returned to the academy on your player board

Round Structure

With the exception of the setup round, a round is performed as follows:

  • The Chronos meeple is moved one space forward on the era track
  • Players take turns in turn order, where each player does the following:
    • Take 1 main action
    • Optionally, take 1 or more chain actions

Turn Structure

A player's turn is divided into 4 steps:

  1. Prepare chain action tokens
  2. Perform actions
  3. Aspirations become progress
  4. Build progress

2 player game rules

The rules for 2 player games are almost the same as 3 and 4 player rules, except for the following changes:

  • Players gain influence when an opponent performs a main action on the same action space as your season pillar tokens as well, not just the same space as your epoch pillar token

When it comes to Chronos specific rules:

  • All of Chronos' citizens are scholars and has no scholar limit
  • Chronos has access to all private milestones and milestones in the discard, not just their own
  • On Chronos' turn:
    • Move their season pillar to the next region in the migration path
    • Then try to perform one of the following 4 actions:
      1. Present an Idea
      2. Invent
      3. Share Invention
      4. Innovate
    • If Chronos is unable to perform any of the above actions in his current region, he moves to the next region and re-evaluates the actions until Chronos finds an action they can do

  • Find number of tokens marked next to your space on influence track
  • Move that many chain tokens from left to right in upper left corner of player board

A player's turn is divided into 4 steps:

  1. Prepare chain action tokens
  2. Perform actions
  3. Aspirations become progress
  4. Build progress

  • Place one of your idea card from right of your player board in region with no display card in it
  • Spend required number of specialists:
    • Cost is given on tile to left of card just played
    • Move that number of specialists from your player board onto specialist tile
  • Gain benefit depicted on specialist tile
  • At the end of your turn, for each idea you have presented this turn:
    • Select an idea from the idea display
    • Place the selected card to the right of your player board to fill the gap left by the idea card you played this turn
    • Slide the cards in the idea display down so that 4 cards are available to choose from

Chronos (2 player games)

Skip this action if this region already has an idea in it

  • Take the rightmost idea from the idea display and place it in the region
  • Place required 1 or 2 of his citizens on specialist tile to left of idea
  • Chronos does not receive bonus from specialist tile

  • Choose any presented idea on the board whose milestone you have access to:
    • The required milestone is given on the top right corner of the card
  • Place an aspiration token on the leftmost space of your tile display rotated so that the brown section of the tile is at the top
  • Move an available specialist of the same specialty as your idea from your player board to the invent space to the right of the idea
  • If the idea requires you to exhaust additional specialists to invent it, exhaust them now:
    • This requirement will be shown to the left of the invent space on the card, next to the required milestone
  • Flip the card over to its invention side

Chronos (2 player games)

Skip this action if this region already has an invention in it

Requirements for Chronos to be able to do this action:

  • Must have 1 citizen (which is always a scholar)
  • Required milestone must be on board:
    • If it isn't, move his pillar to next region and start Chronos' turn again
  • Take progress tile from display matching type of idea Chronos invented and region number:
    • If no progress tile of that type and region are left or Chronos already has a tile of that number, Chronos looks for tile of next region number, and the next one until Chronos can take one
  • Discard the progress tile taken by Chronos

  • Move an available specialist of the same specialty as the invention you want to innovate from your player board to the right of the invention
  • Gain 1 specialist of the same type as the invention and place it in the upper space on your player board for that specialty:
    • Take the citizen meeple from your personal supply
  • If you have a chain action token, you may perform the chain action to the left of the innovate space:
    • If you do this, place a chain action token on the card

Chronos (2 player games)

Skip this action if Chronos cannot innovate:

  • Move Chronos' pillar to the next region in the migration path and restart Chronos' turn
  • As usual, place a citizen from Chronos' supply on the Innovate space

  • The player whose citizens are to the left of the invention scores victory points equal to the era of the invention for each of their citizens to the left of the card
  • The inventor moves the invention to the left side of their player board
  • The innovator (if any) places a citizen from their supply in the same region on the map
  • You take one of the following:
    • 1 wealth tile from this region
    • 1 wild aspiration tile
  • Place the selected tile in the leftmost space of your tiles display:
    • If your tiles display is full, you can replace a tile in the display or you can forgo this benefit
  • Move all citizen meeples that were beside this invention to the matching region of the map

Chronos (2 player games)

Skip this action if Chronos cannot share an invention in this region:

  • Meaning that Chronos can only share an invention that they presented, invented or innovated
  • Chronos does not score victory points from this action
  • As usual move all citizens from invention to connected region following normal rules
  • Move topmost wealth tile from stack next to Chronos' supply
  • If there are none left, Chronos takes a Progress tile matching the type of invention they shared and the region number
  • If no progress tiles of that region remain, look for a tile matching next region, and next until one can be taken
  • If Chronos was the inventor, discard the card
  • If Chronos was the innovator, place a new citizen in the map region

  • Place 1 aspiration tile in the leftmost space of your tile display rotated so that the teal section is at the top
  • Choose 1 region and return 1 or more of your citizens from that map region home to the upper space of specialty area matching the idea or invention in the region from which they returned:
    • If there isn't a card in the region, their specialty is determined by the rightmost card of idea display
    • If there are no idea cards in the display, you may choose their specialty:
      • They must all be returned to same specialty
  • If you have any chain action tokens remaining, you may perform a chain action from any one of the inventions to the left of your player board:
    • If you do, place a chain action token on the card
    • You are not allowed to chain the same invention's action twice in one turn

  • Choose an influence token on your player board that you wish to place:
    • You may place any influence token you wish with this action, you don't need to do them in order
  • Choose region which matches the following conditions:
    • You do not have an influence token there:
      • You cannot have more than 1 influence token in a region
    • You have more citizens there than any other player
    • You have at least as many citizens as the number shown on your player board above the chosen influence token
  • Return the number of citizens shown above the influence token chosen to upper space of specialty area matching idea/invention of region citizens are returning from:
    • If there isn't a card in the region, their specialty is determined by the rightmost card of idea display
    • If there are no idea cards in the display, you may choose their specialty:
      • They must all be returned to same specialty
  • Place chosen influence token to leftmost empty influence space in region
  • Gain victory points covered by this token
  • Gain influence equal to number of face-up influence tokens you have on main board
  • If you have any chain action tokens remaining, you may perform the chain action of one of your face-up influence tokens from any region:
    • If you do so, permanently flip the used influence token face down, then place a chain action token on top of it

  • Place aspiration tile on leftmost empty space of your tile display such that the white part is at the top
  • Move 1 of your citizens on the map to an adjacent region, following a blue rope:
    • You cannot move a citizen on a region display space with this action
  • If a sage is in the new region and you still have a chain action token, you may place the chain action token near the knowledge tile and do the following:
    • If the knowledge tile shows a chain action, you may do this action and then flip the knowledge tile to the scoring side
    • Otherwise, if the tile is showing its 2 victory point side, gain the victory points shown on each knowledge tile on the map showing victory points and then flip all knowledge tiles to the non-victory points side:
      • All tiles are flipped, not just those with sages above them
    • Finally, move the sage from that region to the academy area of your player board

Note: You can only perform this action if the milestones of the eureka display are from a later era than your private milestone.

  • Move the bottommost card out of the common knowledge display and put it on the discard pile:
    • All citizens on the card are returned to their owners and placed in their academies
    • Your milestone's era number is the maximum number of scholars you can have in your academy:
      • You use the new milestone's era number for this calculation for yourself
  • Move your private milestone to the common knowledge display along with any diplomats on it:
    • Insert it above all milestone tiles with the same or earlier deck letter on it
  • Select a milestone from the eureka display
  • Move it to your private milestone display
  • Place 1 citizen from your supply on the left side of the card but don't take the action shown on it
  • Advance your era marker to an unoccupied space of the new milestone's era
  • Take the benefit of the chosen space

  • Move any specialist or scholar from your player board to a milestone tile on the board that:
    • Has at least 1 free space on its left side
    • You do not already have a citizen on
  • If the milestone belongs to another player and is from a more advanced era than yours, that player gains 1 influence
  • Take the benefit shown above the handshake icon on the milestone tile

  • Bring one of your citizens on a milestone home as a scholar:
    • Your milestone's era number is the maximum number of scholars that you can have at your academy
  • Take benefit shown above handshake icon on milestone tile you just left

  • Replace any aspiration tiles you received during your turn with progress tiles:
    • Progress tile must match type of aspiration tile received
    • You can replace wild aspiration tiles with progress tiles of any type
    • You are only allowed to have one tile of each number/letter

  • If you wish to build tiles this turn, pay influence cost showing on leftmost empty space of tiles display
  • You are only able to build a number of tiles equal to your milestone's era minus 1
  • For each tile you wish to build:
    • Place tile on any space of your progress map that is empty
    • Immediately gain benefit printed on that space
    • Pay placement cost in specialists:
      • To calculate the number of specialists to exhaust:
        • Start by taking the tile's base cost: Tile typeBase costEconomy1Technology1Culture1Wealth2
        • Add 1 to this cost for each previously placed tile that is adjacent to the new tile
        • Reduce this cost by 1 for each invention card of the same type that you have to the left of your player board
      • If the tile is an economy (teal), culture (white) or technology (brown) tile:
        • Exhaust specialists of the same type (or scholars)
      • If the tile is a Wealth (gold) tile:
        • Exhaust any mix of specialists

  • Advance Chronos meeple 1 space forward on era track
  • If Chronos entered new era, perform era change procedure

End of Era 1

  • 2P:
    • Chronos places one of their influence tokens on main board:
      • Place influence token in next region along in migration path where Chronos does not already have an influence token
      • Move season pillar to region where influence token was placed
  • Adjust turn order:
    • If at least one player's era marker is on change position in turn order space on era track:
      • Player who is in rightmost turn order space moves their turn order marker to desired space and adjusts the other markers to maintain relative order
  • Adjust influence:
    • Each player loses or gains influence as shown to left of their space of influence track

End of Eras 2-4

  • 2P:
    • Chronos places one of their influence tokens on main board:
      • Place influence token in next region along in migration path where Chronos does not already have an influence token
      • Move season pillar to region where influence token was placed
    • Take Chronos' current milestone and place it in common knowledge display, sliding down others as usual
    • Take rightmost milestone of eureka display and place it on Chronos' private milestone space
    • Move Chronos' marker on era track to era matching milestone in rightmost space
    • If he ends up on rightmost turn order space with era marker on it, he will adjust turn order to put himself first if possible during turn order change process
  • Move all exhausted specialists to corresponding upper spaces
  • Retrieve season pillars:
    • Epoch pillar stays where it is on main board

    • Place 1 citizen from your supply on your academy:
      • You can store a maximum of your milestone's era number of scholars in your academy
    • Return sage to an empty sage space on main board
  • Return any economy tokens that were placed on economy progress tiles back to their spaces in lower right corner of your player board
  • Move all milestone tiles remaining in eureka display to common knowledge display:
    • 2-3P:
      • Move all non-human player private milestones first, then replace them with the rightmost milestone of the eureka display
  • For each tile that is pushed out the bottom:
    • Splay it on discard pile so names of discarded milestones are still visible
    • All citizens on it return to their owners as scholars:
      • You can store a maximum of your milestone's era number of scholars in your academy
  • Discard all idea cards from the previous era that are in the idea display
  • In turn order, check idea cards to right of your player board and discard ideas from previous era:
    • For each card discarded, take a new one from the display
    • Discarded idea cards are removed from the game entirely

End of the second era, and thus the game, will be triggered when one of following conditions is met:

  • A player has completed 4 sets of rubble
  • At least 3 of brown decks have been exhausted

End of the second era occurs at end of round when this condition is met, and then all players will one more round before final scoring occurs

At the start of era 6, all players score points for the following:

  • Your position on the influence track
  • Wealth tiles
  • 2 of your private goal cards

Winner is player with most victory points

Tiebreakers are:

  • Most tiles on progress map
  • Most inventions to left of player board

      • If bot cannot perform action with arrow pointing at it, it then chooses next action card that it can complete, looping back to top of card if necessary
    • If chosen action on card has chain action next to it, attempt next action on card as chain action
    • Continue performing chain actions in this manner up to number of chain action token bot has
    • If bot cannot perform action that is chained this way, bot's turn ends even if they have chain marker tokens remaining
  • When Hephaestus takes progress tile:
    • Progress tile with same number as region and specialty matching idea card in region is taken
    • If no tiles of that type are left, progress tile of next number in sequence is taken until they can take tile
    • If bot performed Share action, wealth tile is taken instead
