- Shuffle bonus cards and deal 2 to each player
- Each player receives:
- 1 player mat
- 5 bird cards
- 2 bonus cards
- 8 action cubes
- 5 food tokens (one of each type excluding nectar)
- Keep up to 5 bird cards:
- For each card you wish to keep, discard 1 food token
- Discard the rest face-down
- All players then receive 1 nectar
- Choose 1 bonus card to keep:
- Discard the other face-down
- Choose the starting player
The game is played over 4 rounds, where in each round players will take turns, starting with the first player and procceding clockwise, until all players have used all of their action cubes
On your turn, you may take one of 4 actions:
- Play a Bird
- Gain Food
- Lay Eggs
- Draw Bird Cards
When you take an action, depending on the power written on the card of the bird being played, or the birds that have been played into the row of the action you are taking, you may be able to activate the power to receive a benefit. These benefits are always optional.
When you take food from the birdfeeder:
- If the birdfeeder is empty then reroll all 5 dice in the birdfeeder
- If all dice still in the birdfeeder are ever showing the same face, then you are allowed to reroll all 5 dice in the birdfeeder
When you use nectar:
- If you use it in any of the following situations:
- Paying a bird's cost
- Using an "any food" ability
- Upgrading an action
- Place the spent nectar token on the spent nectar space of the corresponding row of your player mat
- Place an action cube on the "Play a Bird" space
- Choose a bird from your hand to play
- Pay the bird card's food cost:
- When playing birds, you may spend any 2 food tokens as if they were 1 food token of any type
- You cannot do this exchange at any other point in the game
- You can do this exchange to gain nectar as well
- Pay the number of eggs as shown on the top of the column you will place the bird into
- Place the bird in the leftmost space of a row of your choice that matches the row requirement written on the card
- If the bird has a "When played" power, you can activate it now
- Place an action cube on the leftmost empty space in the "Gain Food" row
- Some spaces have an option for you to discard a card from your hand to allow you to take an extra food dice
- For each die that you can take:
- Take one die from the birdfeeder
- Take the food token from the supply matching the face showing on the die
- If there is a slash between more than one token, you can choose one of them to receive
- Receive the resources shown on the dice you took
- From right to left, move your action cube onto each of your birds:
- If the card has a "When activated" power, you may activate the effect now
- Finally, move it onto the space to the left of the card spaces for this action
- Place an action cube on the leftmost empty space in the "Lay Eggs" row
- Some spaces have an option for you to discard a food token of any type to allow you to lay an extra egg
- For each egg that you can lay:
- Take one egg from the supply
- Place it onto an egg that has room for an extra egg on it
- The colour of the egg is not important
- From right to left, move your action cube onto each of your birds:
- If the card has a "When activated" power, you may activate the effect now
- Finally, move it onto the space to the left of the card spaces for this action
- Place an action cube on the leftmost empty space in the "Draw More Cards" row
- Some spaces have an option for you to discard an egg on your board to allow you to draw an extra bird card
- For each card that you can draw:
- Draw a card from either the bird tray or the top of the deck
- Cards are not refilled immediately if taken from the tray
- From right to left, move your action cube onto each of your birds:
- If the card has a "When activated" power, you may activate the effect now
- Finally, move it onto the space to the left of the card spaces for this action
- Refill any empty spaces in the bird tray
When all player's action cubes have been spent, the round ends:
- Remove all action cubes from the player mat
- In turn order, each player activate all "Round end" bird powers on their mat:
- These powers do not activate "Once between turns" powers on other player's mats
- Discard any unused nectar tokens that you have
- Score the end-of-round goal:
- Count your score for the current round goal
- Compare your score to other players
- Place one of your action cubes on the appropriate space on the goal board for that round
- In the case of ties, place all tied cubes on the same place on the board:
- The next position that is scored is (number of tied players - 1):
- i.e. If two players are tied for 1st, then no one would receive the 2nd place bonus
- The next position that is scored is (number of tied players - 1):
- Even if you did not score any points for a goal, you must place an action cube on the goal on the 0 space
At the end of the 4th round, the game ends.
Each player can then activate all birds on their mat that have a "Game end" power:
- These powers do not activate "Once between turns" powers on other player's mats
Each player now scores for the following categories:
- Points for each face-up bird on your player mat
- Points for your bonus card(s)
- Points for end-of-round goals
- For each row of the player mat, if you have the most spent nectar:
- 1st place: 5 points
- 2nd place: 2 points
- For ties, divide points evenly among tied players, rounding down
- If players tie for 1st, 2nd place is not scored
- You must have at least 1 nectar in a row to score points for it
- 1 point for each:
- egg on bird card
- food token cached on a bird card
- card tucked under a bird card
The winner is the player with the most points.
Tiebreakers are:
- Player with the most unused food tokens
Otherwise, the victory is shared
